Marx’s insights helped change capitalism but singer doesn’t seem to recognise this and instead seems to judge Marx for not analysing all forms of capitalism rather than just the form that existed in his time. Likewise singer criticises Marx for predicting wages would tend toward subsistence levels, ignoring the fact labour had to fight hard to prevent that from happening. Why singer couldn’t check this I don’t know but instead he just assumes it’s false.
But in fact the rate of profit has been on a downward trend since Marx’s time. Of the top of my head, an example would be that he thinks Marx was wrong to predict the rate of profit would fall as this hasn’t happened. However his analysis of Marx isn’t the best and when it comes to criticisms he has many - but many of them seem to be based on misunderstandings of either Marx or the world. The historical background is very good as is his explanation of how Hegel influenced him (hint Marx is basically Hegel fan fiction) Marxism encompasses an economic theory, a sociological theory, a philosophical method and a revolutionary view of social change. Marxism is a growing/changing economic/sociopolitical worldview and method of socioeconomic inquiry based upon a materialist interpretation of historical development, a dialectical view of social change, and an analysis of class-relations within society and their application in the analysis and critique of the development of capitalism. Otherwise we'll be importing the same rules more or less from r/communism, except a bit laxer, less severe, with comment removals instead of bans, and explanatory temp bans issued over perma bans in almost all cases.
