My opinion of the PG film was no doubt colored by the fact that I saw the premiere in Marshall, which is celebrating the release with red carpet events and tours of the places that inspired John Bellairs and much else. Zimmermann's special chocolate-chip cookies with nuts, and they will feel indomitable.Īs with any art form, beauty is in the eye of the beholder when discussing "The House with a Clock in Its Walls." In the end, they will leave wanting one of Mrs. Zimmermann face-off against mechanical dolls and puppets that come to life and the next they are up against jack-o'-lanterns spitting pumpkin guts.Ĭhildren and adults will both be roaring at some parts and thrilled with fright at others.
It’s to be expected, given that the film is directed by Eli Roth, a master of horror films, and written by Eric Kripke, creator of TV’s “Supernatural.” The movie is the perfect mix of thrills and comic relief, with Black and Blanchett lobbing one-liners at one other. “The House with a Clock in Its Walls” wasn’t filmed in Marshall, the town that inspired Bellairs when he created New Zebedee, but it nonetheless conveys the spirit of a historic town that is magical and mysterious.
But, over time, Lewis’ curiosity about the magic surrounding him leads him to be courageous. The dictionary-reading nerd is fearful of his uncle and the new town he’s in, worried about fitting in at school. He wears goggles like Captain Midnight and hopes to be indomitable like he is. Lewis idolizes Captain Midnight, a war hero from a 1950s TV series. The movie, though, is still a story of a boy figuring out how to persevere in the face of the worst kind of danger. Florence Zimmermann (Cate Blanchett), a good witch.
